Although stepfamilies - families in which at least one of the adults is a stepparent - are commonplace in our society, there are amazingly few resources to assist them with their complex situations. For example, a local Borders bookstore has over a shelf of books devoted to divorce, but has only two books dealing with remarriage and stepparenting. The situation at local libraries is distressingly similar.
Clinical experience and research demonstrate that stepfamilies can benefit from working with a knowledgeable family therapist (click here for more information about family therapy) who understands their unique stresses and works well with their complex family situation. Although time and trial-and-error are important in helping stepfamilies achieve integration, much can be accomplished through focused and timely professional intervention.
